But I've Never Run a 5k Before!

Our patients are accomplishing big goals and for many of them that means putting feet to the pavement and signing up for running events. We are proud to offer several events including the St. Patrick’s Day Run, Warrior Dash, Race for the Cure and Route 66 Marathon in 2014. Marathon? Yes, that’s right. Our first marathon relay team participated in the 2013 Route 66 Marathon and showed us that anything is possible. If your first thought is, “I could never run that far,” the marathon relay team thought the same thing. Bailey Medical Center Health and Wellness Coordinator David Steward joins us on the blog today to help you get started in running events, even if you don’t think you’re ready to run a whole race.

If I am not used to running 3.2 miles straight, can I still participate in a 5k?

Yes!  There is a 1-mile fun walk if 3.2 miles sounds too long.  You are also allowed to walk the 5k.  There is no time limit and 80 percent of people will walk/jog the 3.2 miles.  There are only a select few who run the whole race.  This is simply fun event that allows you to participate with the bariatric community at Bailey Medical Center.

How much should I train before the event?

You need to train for any event.  I would begin walking a few blocks and then work up from there.  Once you feel like you can walk a mile then begin interval training.  This means 30 seconds of running and 2 minutes of walking.  As this becomes easier for you, start increasing the running interval and decreasing the walking interval.  This takes time and discipline.  Start slow and steady and work your way forward.

What should I bring with me to a race?

Bring anyone who is willing to walk with you.  Family, friends and kids are all welcome to the running events.  Everyone will need to register to participate in the walk or run.

How is participating on the Bailey Bariatrics team different than just running the event by myself?

You get the opportunity to inspire others.  You get an opportunity to define your new lifestyle.  The reason you chose to go through this journey is to improve your health and this is one more step on that path.  I would embrace this event by not only training, but also inviting your support system to join you!
